Lou was undermined by wankers like Tony Gale who didn't like being told a few home truths.

I don’t think he really got a chance and there were elements that were against him from the outset, due to his non wh links and his dodginess

Re: Well done Lou Macari!
I sent Lou Macari a letter, offering my condolences on the death of his son who committed suicide back in 1999. I also referenced his short spell as our manager and the excellent signings who became the backbone of our team for years afterwards. To my surprise, he replied, thanking me for taking the time to write and for my comments on his signings; he wished he hadn’t resigned back in February 1990.

A good man.....

Re: Well done Lou Macari!
I'm not sure he can be judged effectively as a manager over 38 games. If you feel he can his win percentage was 36.84%

Personally I have fond memories, if for nothing other than bringing those players to the club that became the backbone of our promotion winning team

Either way, good on the fella

On the advice of Sir Alf I watched Marvellous, a gorgeous film in which Macari appears. If half is true of how he's depicted I have to admit that I really misjudged the man.

Stoke City fans too. They truly took this guy to their hearts.

Toby Jones's character is very reminiscent of Forrest Gump or Chance the gardener in Being There. What's remarkable is this one is based on a true story.

I thoroughly recommend it. You'll find it on Amazon.

Agree a great story, Macari is more than a one hit wonder when it comes to this sort of thing, does seem to have his heart in the right place.

I am sure he was also pivotal in helping the lad with learning difficulties who was boot boy or kit man at Stoke. There was a great film called Marvellous all about it with Toby Jones.

Dumped out of a cup by a minnow like Torquay?

Thank fuck we learned our lessons from that and were never on the other end of a cup upset ever again, eh?

To reiterate, we were 10th in the Championship when we parted company with Macari.

The 30th best team in the country.

Forgive me if I don't remember him too fondly.

Re: Well done Lou Macari!
Hmm, a few rose-tinted specs when it comes to Macari.

He's obviously a half-decent fella. But he was a quite poor football manager - we were awful under him at times. Sure, he made some excellent signings. But the fact that he was not a great manager is highlighted by what happened to his career when he left West Ham.

He didn't exactly rip up any trees anywhere else. Had one decent season at Stoke in the lower leagues. He was poor everywhere else, including stints at Celtic, Birmingham, Stoke (again) and Huddersfield.

Had he been that talented a manager, he'd have got it right somewhere else (other than cheating Swindon, who were paying massively and illegally through the nose - Macari says unbeknown to him - in the lower leagues).

He's obviously a half-decent fella - as his anti-homeless initiatives show. And he clearly has an eye for a good player. Sounds like he would have been a better chief scout than a manager.

But he would not have been a better manager than Bonds or Redknapp had we kept him. People might not like Harry's wheeler-dealer style and made-up nonsense about his overthrow of Billy, but he was a significantly better manager than Macari - and he proved it at several clubs.

Re: Well done Lou Macari!
I remember being excited at his appointment too. I can't remember who said it but one of the players back then complained to the newspapers about all the running training they had to do.

God forbid our sometimes very pub-team-ish club had to run around a bit. Maybe if he'd stayed a bit longer I wouldn't have to had endured (with notable exceptions) the following 30 years of a great day out marred by 90 minutes of football?

Re: Well done Lou Macari!
Honestly judging the man's life on a naughty bet he placed 35 years ago when he's now doing things like this just makes you look like a cunt. But we aren't short of them on here.

First manager that had no West Ham connections, I remember being excited at the prospect and disappointed when he left but I was only 17 at the time and I'm nearly 49 now.

Looking it up, it's actually 31 years to the day tomorrow that he left us. Didn't have long to show us what he had but surely we must love him for signing Ludo, Martin Allen and Mr and Mrs Morley-Bishop?

Top bloke and this has gone under the radar as he opened up this homeless place 5 years ago
